The higher technician specialised in merchant ships management has expertise in the governance and movement of the ship.

In the deck department, the higher technician’s activities concern: the techniques and methods for choosing the route of the ship, management, organization of resources and personnel, and the handling of the cargo.

This professional figure possesses the basic skills of the merchant marine officer.

The course is aimed at the obtainment of the professional qualification of Officer, after passing the related examination at the harbour-offices. Therefore, in compliance with the provisions issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in harmony with the rules of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), contained in the International Convention on Standards of Training and Certification of boat crew members (STCW 78/95), it includes the prescribed internship experiences on board of ships, and the accessory certifications required.

The courses for official cadets, Deck and Machinery department, are aimed at all graduates from the Technical Institutes for Transport and Logistics (formerly “Nautical Institutes”) and to graduates from other Institutes who have adapted their upper secondary study through a remedial course (D.MIT 30/11/2007).

The course is aimed at the achievement of skills and abilities and the acquisition of the knowledge referred to in Tables A-II / 1 of the STCW Convention ’78 / 95 and subsequent amendments (Manila 2010).

During the course, the student acquires skills and knowledge useful for obtaining the diploma of “Higher technician for the mobility of people and goods “(Vessel Management or Management of on-board equipment and systems sector) and to take the exam at the Maritime Directorates for the qualification of “Navigation Officer” or “Engine Officer”.
