Study in Sicily – Internationalization, Mobility and Cooperation in the Mediterranean
Study in Sicily is the strategic initiative of the Sicilian Region – Department of Education and Vocational Training, implemented within the FSE+ Programme 2021–2027 and managed directly by INDIRE, the National Institute for Documentation, Innovation and Educational Research in Italy.
Study in Sicily aims to:
- promote inbound mobility, academic cooperation, and the enhancement of the entire regional education and training system. The project strengthens collaboration between Sicily and Mediterranean countries, fostering an open, international and inclusive regional education system based on the principles of transparency, participation, non‑discrimination and equal opportunities.
- support international pathways from school to higher education institutions, and across different university levels;
- facilitate the participation of students facing economic disadvantage through dedicated scholarships;
- engage international students in Sicily’s sectors of excellence – agriculture, enology, architecture, cultural heritage, naval studies, engineering and other strategic fields.
Why choose Sicily for your studies?
Are you finishing upper secondary school and unsure about your next step? Have you completed your bachelor’s degree and want to add an international opportunity to your Master’s path? Or perhaps you would like to study abroad for a few months during your university studies?
Come study in Sicily! Palermo, Catania, Messina, Siracusa, Enna, Caltagirone and many other cities await you with an extraordinary international academic offer, plus:
- a unique cultural heritage: the Region hosts 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with many other classical, medieval and Renaissance landmarks;
- an exceptional culinary tradition: Sicily has received European quality certification for 64 traditional food products;
- a strong presence of international communities, especially from Southern Mediterranean countries;
- one of the lowest costs of living in Italy and Europe, highly advantageous for students;
- excellent climate conditions, ideal for international students, particularly those coming from North Africa and the Middle East.
Internationalization of Education Systems (PR FSE+ Sicily 2021–2027)
In continuity with the previous programming period, the PR FSE+ Sicily supports a wide range of actions dedicated to the mobility of education system actors and to internationalization, including:
- language learning pathways in other countries;
- linguistic enhancement activities and the development of CLIL methodologies;
- initiatives complementary to the Erasmus+ Programme;
- awareness‑raising activities to encourage university attendance among foreign students, with particular attention to Mediterranean and non‑EU countries;
- internships (including transnational ones), laboratories and school‑to‑work transition methodologies to support the shift from education to training and employment;
- interventions for the internationalization of training pathways and for strengthening the global attractiveness of universities and equivalent institutions;
- promotion of doctoral programmes integrated into national and international networks, aligned with the strategic directions of the regional S3, the PNRR and the National Research and Competitiveness Plan.
These actions reinforce the mission of Study in Sicily, expanding opportunities for mobility, exchange and growth for students across the Mediterranean.
